You use lightweight PVC piping, foam pipe insulation, and duct tape. The instructions on how to make and use such weapons are found in various places on the web. I don't mean this to beat down the SCA, for I think many of their other activities can be quite fun. But for the average joe, I think boffer combat is the way to go.
