I've seen SCA combat, and it looks like no picnic. You have to wear armor, real armor, to do the combat. Steel or heavy plastic chest plate, steel arm guards, steel leg guards, steel helmets with a wire cage over the face. The reason for all this protection is because you use rattan in the SCA. Imagine grabbing the pole out of your closet and beating someone with it. Heh, if I wanted that, I'd go to south central LA.

One alternative (and the more sane one in my opinion) is boffer combat. You use lightweight PVC piping, foam pipe insulation, and duct tape. The instructions on how to make and use such weapons are found in various places on the web.

I don't mean this to beat down the SCA, for I think many of their other activities can be quite fun. But for the average joe, I think boffer combat is the way to go.

Just don't tell the SCA you use boffers. They'll laugh at ya.
