In these parts, most SCA people wear leather armor which is light and vs rattan is nearly as protective as steel. With a good set of armor it is very difficult to get hurt.
SCA combat is great fun, but it has its drawbacks:
1. To get a lot out of the SCA you have to put a lot of time into it. Even if you just want to do the fighting, you still need to build or buy armor, and practice a lot to be any good.
2. You have to hang around with large numbers of extremely wierd people - the SCA attracts a lot of social outcasts (though it attracts some pretty cool people too).

If you are at all interested in the SCA - even just to see what it is about - chances are there is a group in your area. Look in the phonebook (whitepages) for Richard Lionheart, or surf over to www.sca.org and look around for a group near you (or use a search engine with your city and SCA as keywords). SCA groups tend to be very welcoming to new members.
