Is a kitten a pet? Is an arial mercenary a merc? Is an arial mercenary better than a kitten? If you said yes to all the above questions, then a merc CAN be better than a pet.

Generally speaking, the higher rank the mercenary, the higher the quality. (You can see this when you do a list at the stores)

Wow, this is a wild statement. Any decent warrior can take out any single person when using this magical mercenary? Perhaps if he managed to get this mystical merc at rank 11, other than that, I'd say you're way off base. Once you pass about rank 25, merc's are basically walking luggage, that's about it.
