If any of you remember my first post on this forum as "The Ponderer" you'll remember that it was about the forum, IRC, and ICQ and how they work to undermine the game while promoting the soap opera that many of us are a part of. This is merely a rehashing of that, and an extension of what Grummore posted below. Firstly, I feel I must apologize for the Forum staff. I can't help but feel that if we were a little more vigilant this whole Scarabaeus ordeal might not have ocurred, or at the very least might have been postponed. Chris's original post should've been deleted at the very beginning. That's neither here nor there though. The forum displays the answers to these questions for all to see, spreading out the "benefits" to the masses and multiplying the reduction of necessary IC interactions. ICQ is largely an information sharer's dream. Little cliques are formed and in those cliques information is shared willingly, furthering their cause, but undermining the game either further. The problem is such that you can't simply remove the forum, the IRC channel, and ask people to delete their ICQ, because others will just pop up in their place. The only answer is to stop using them yourself. I use ICQ and read the forum, but I've stopped attending the IRC pissing contests, and the game is SOOOO much better and more enjoyable now that I have. Believe me, CF is a lot more fun when you're not involved in the soap opera, but for the powergamers out there(and it's a majority of you I'm sure) these things are necessary. So, the best advice I can give is to cut one of the three out. I would recommend the forum, but IRC is a good start. I'm sure you'll get much more enjoyment out of the game, even if you're knowledge is lessened.
Cf forums have never served to further roleplaying or the game in general. If you think about, cf forums mainly serve to cut down on IC interactions that would be necessary to find out the intricacies of the Theran world. With the advent of the forum, those interactions were brought outside the game as it's much easier to ask the necessary questions here, and save pk'ing for in the game. IRC furthers that problem in part, by making the question asking that much easier as you don't have to wait for extended periods for a suitable reply. IRC is far less detrimental than either the forum or ICQ however, for different reasons respectively.
