Remember, if you want to "break the mold" it is possible to make a character that believes for example that vanish is magic, and as such does not use it. Same with weapons, et al. If he wants to store that magical item to keep it out of the hands of mages so be it.

Flesh out your character with his own beliefs and he will be stronger rp-wise than any character that just follows the flock.
