That was not my rationale, my rationale was that the Spellbane was more of a one room area thing, and if you are close enough to be in combat, the spellbane is close enough to catch and deflect the magical energies BEFORE it reaches the pebble and turns it into a boulder, not that it deflects the boulder because it is magical.
