I have heard all kinds of things about AC. Some say it matters not after low levels. Could this be the case? I have been playing a long time and all I have are guesses. If you get hit, does AC have anything to do with dam? (That would certainly make sense) There is enough differing of opinion to suggest that the answer is not obvious, but it seems like basic information that should be clearly explained in a helpfile.

P.S. Why should wearing tough, strong armor make something miss you? Wouldn't it be just as likely to hit you but do less damage?
