The biggest problem I've encountered with trying to come up with an alternative is that I'd say well over 60-80% of the mud are neutrals with occasional acts of good or evil...at least taken at face value. There are a lot of characters I've heard that say 'why are you judging me based on my race...judge me for me' when a Maran comes swooping down on the drow to give them mithril acupuncture. While a few drows have managed to make the switch to Light, the majority of them don't care to until the 10th Brigade of Light sweeps down on them...which in my mind means they don't have a problem with the atrocities thier race has perpetrated in the past, and even revel in them. Drows, Duergar, Fire giants are all cruel and evil races...that's where the red aura comes from. Anti-paladins, Necromancers...they draw thier magics from dark-gods...that's where thier red taint comes from. This is why I don't have a problem with the 'red aura' hunting of these races/classes.
Now let's look at others with red auras...(these being the arials, half-elves, humans, felars that chose to be evil at character creation) some of these players should've picked neutral, quite honestly...since this is where my neutral with gold/red spray paint comment comes into play. If you pick evil...for the love of god, play an evil. I don't mean you have to wear black, or cackle a lot...but don't play a nice, goodie goodie that's evil because you want better gear. I'm rambling a little here, so let me try to reign my thoughts back in....okay, reigned in.
I know in AD&D there weren't really any restrictions on alignment interaction (well, not much anyway)...however, for a variety of reasons on CF, we figured it would be best to limit them...I mean, sure an evil Arbiter and a good Arbiter could go after the same criminal...and would probably be beneficial for them to group. As soon as they do though, I'd wonder to myself why the good Arbiter didn't roll up a neutral instead. In a lot of ways the burden of alignment roleplay is on goods...however, the swingback on that is that the burden of not being killed for your aura is on the evil. I admit openly, it's an imperfect system...but I think this'll help explain a little more where I (at least) stand on the subject.
