I know what you mean. I'm afraid to write up too "fantastic" roles, because I'm not sure how well they would sit with the immortals and/or how well they fit into the CF world. One thing I do is to ask myself if I can imagine various aspects of my role as part of an area. For example, I can see Pico breathing life into a statue in his temple on a whim. The Orb of Shadow could be a real item in a new area with strange properties. Cyradia's mermaid vampires or whatever don't really fit in, at least not to me. My solution is to make any fantastic roles always have the possibility of being untrue. For example, the statue-man was only told his history by Pico, and in reality Pico gave some poor guy amnesia and made the whole thing up. I guess what I'm saying is that I'll try to write these types of roles more from the character's point of view, stating what he believes, but leaving the possibility of his beliefs being wrong.
That way, if an Immortal decides that the role is too far out, he/she can tell the character the truth of his history, or whatever. I hope that was coherent. I need sleep.
