Mainly they have to do with where you nightgaunt people to and what's already there (or nearby). I must say, though, they're incredible for exploring. With one of the better archons, you can pretty much walk through most anything and not have to worry about dying before having time to flee. Plus you don't need a healer, since the archon can fix most anything. But you already knew that. :)
