I've never used either IRC or ICQ, but I know what both pieces of software let you do, should you wish to. I'm not saying that everyone who uses either of these programs is cheating by doing so. My point is that both of these software packages allow you to silently transfer information OOC. The reason the forum is superior to this is because all of the information is thrown out there where everyone can see it. If you are doing things inappropriately, your post can be removed, and your site can be banned. It creates accountability, and levels the playing field- you either tell everyone, or no one. I see this as a good thing, and a great reason to keep a Forum active. > Here's what I've seen. People log on as their character's name or make references to the character they play or ones they have played. That's fine. People send private messages to them talking about the characters. Fine. Eventually there's the "elite" #cf crowd that knows everyone else's characters. They roll up characters together, sometimes cheating with their higher level characters as well. Things that in the mud would be akward such as identifying things and trying to relate their stats are completely circumvented because they can just send a /msg. In a lot of ways its like a computer lab group. Only on #cf you can get stabbed in the back and not be able to kick them in the ass the next day. > ICQ is pretty much another version of this, but the alert noise you get when someone sends you a message helps to ensure that you can log on your character quickly and help defend/raid/whatever. > That's not to say its all bad. Surely the conversation in #cf can be pretty immature at times, but its still entertaining. And obviously not everyone uses it to cheat, it just appears that way to someone with as pure of a conscious as myself. Sinners all, you'll burn in Hell.
> The cheating he was referring to on #cf obviously does not happen in the main channel. That would make the cheaters look bad, obviously, and then they would run the risk of allowing others to know their forbidden knowledge.
