I usually write a role at level 1, setting up the character. Then at every stage of life.. maturity, etc etc.. And maybe a few in between. All told, most of my characters have had about 5-8 entries.. ranging from 5-15 screenfuls long, the first entry usually being 2-3 itself.
I've had a lot of success following that 'plan'... Hopefully it helps to motivate (or restrain) others.

Now I don't want to discourage anyone from adding to their role (in fact the only writing a role at level 1 and never touching the command again is another crime all together in many cases), but I think that in many cases this syndrome causes very long roles that don't need to be nearly so long. Symptoms often include adding a role entry nearly every day like the following:
