Along with CFer's, I'll add: 1. Turn on BRIEF MODE. Anyway, those are just general starting points for beginners. PS - always remember that no one is invincible. And, every time you die or he gets away, always blame yourself, first (not his powers). If you focus on what you did wrong, you'll get better. If you focus on how overpowered he is, it was a useless death.
2. Control the Situation.
2a. Be the one that hunts and strikes first.
2b. Your set up to striking first is more important than what you do in the fight.
2bi. Prior preparations (your protections, backup player support, choice of battlefield).
2bii. Known escape routes for him - Know the places he can run to, so you can anticipate it. Try to limit them if you can (ex. summon him to a locked room).
2biii. Known escape routes for you. Don't go into any situation that you don't have a planned way out of. Like DeNiro in Ronin.
2biv. Anticipate what their class can do.
Note: The battles when both you and he just "happen" to cross one another (meaning, neither of you are hunting) are pretty rare. Both of you just pull out stock universal responses from experience, and one of you is probably going to get away.
3. Think in terms of round by round combat.
3a. It goes by fast, but every round counts. Every manuever you make lags you a certain number of rounds. To start, try not to lag yourself unless the maneuver lags him, as well, or gives him a malediction. As you get better, you can compensate for standing there for four rounds after a flurry, but to start, keep with the jabs and moves like bash and trip, dirt, etc. Also, be wary of starting with a two-round lagger (eg. dirt kick that doesn't lag him - trip is an example that lags you both) - because if you dirt him to start, you've wasted the first round, when your attacks would have hit, and given him two rounds to flee and do his first round techinque (if he's not blinded).
