I was under the understanding that all Pets and Mobs controlled by you were viewed as an extention of your person. If you attack with one, you are attacking in the same way that use a weapon. Yeah, it's the sword doing the hurting but you are causing it to do that.

If I was an arbie, I'd flag if someone attacked a familiar. Why? The Law doesn't define EXACTLY what an "attack" is. I would view any action taken to hurt another character as an attack and would flag so on this point, I disagree with you.
