Perhaps this has been said before but here it goes. I think you should gain something for the extra exp you have to pay to play for example an elf(THIS COULD BE FOR ANOTHER RACE AS WELL). For this penalty what do you get a few higher or lower stats here and there (16 con or so isn't it - wow!). And then an elf cannot use iron and receives extra damage from the stuff. Race Skills could be the answer. There are thousands of skills I guess one could use. Example of an elf's starting out skills (remember 500 experience point pen. which builds up over time to the point where a 20th level human could kill a 17th or lower elf when there is not that much difference between them (one might say the elf is weaker especially if the human decides to pull out that nice iron sword.) Resist Disease - 100% This could be done for the majority of the races - Humans should be left at 0 exp penalty because they should have no starting out skills. Maybe elves could later make lambas wafers etc... (I know I'm a lame assmaster but it could help with movement points or something.) Maybe dwarves in higher levels could have the ability to make mithril coats for elves or Mithril Chain for dwarves specifing for either such as arbiters do with there shields (dwarves should be totally resistant to poisons like the elves are to disease). Now you may have a different conception of elves, dwarves etc... But I think adding Race skills into the game would help roleplaying (as well as make up for such a penalty) along with the basic skills and cabal skills. Just a suggestion.
For elves perhaps like in tolkiens world they are immune to disease and can be only slain upon the battle field. Perhaps they could be also resistant to poison. Like a giant they could start our with 100% in resist disease but 1% in poison. Another thing that annoys me is many creatures are meant to have infravision though as a warrior I have never seen this come into play - simple have it as a starting out stat for most demi-humans etc... Infravision should not be left to mages for it is an innate race ability.
Infravision - 100%
Resist Poison - 1%
