I will put forward that in a combat situation, the mage is close enough to the rager, so that the ragers aura of spellbane, will actually spellbane the magic aimed at the pebble, not the boulder itself. same principle with the other elemental spells. the spellbane "banes" the spell before it contacts and controls the elements, it does not "bane" the element itself.
