In Guy Kay Gavariel's (might be Guy Gavariel Kay....its been years) trilogy "The Fionavar Tapestry".

This author is often criticized for over descibing the physical characteristics of a scene....but he does so in such a colorful language that I found it to be actually uplifting from the everyday popcorn you usually get.

With almost every character introduction, he gives a very in depth description of their physical characteristics... He has giants, Wraiths, Dwarves, Lios Alfar(elves), Svart alfar(orcs/duergar) Humans, as well as some others.
