Since I am at work, and bored to all hell, I think this would be perfect time to spout out my idea about merchant classes :

I have often thought about in the big picture of the mud
how useless gold is. Even when people auction items
no one wants gold, it seems to be all about trading.

So here are my ideas:

Blacksmith

A blacksmith would have to travel around Thera
looking for raw materials to to create and kind of weapon
or piece of body armor. A blacksmith would not rank in
the same way as the other classes, he would rank soley on his
history of bartering. Therefore, they would also not have
the same ranking system. Maybe, they would have a total
of 10 ranks and each rank would take them a considerable
amount of time to achieve.

Perhaps the ranking structure titles could be.

Gallows boy, Apprentice Blacksmith, Intermediate Blacksmith,
Journeyman, Blacksmith, Master Blacksmith, and then of course
Grand Master Blacksmith.

Skills:

Forge: The ability to heat metal. A mastered forge skill will result
in stronger armor or weapons. In addition, before the shaping of metal
the metal must be heated. The heated piece of metal must be used as soon
as possible, before it cools off.

Hammer: The abilty to hammer a piece of metal into a breastplate
or greaves, armguards and any other flatened piece of equipment.
Of course you can hammer the piece of flat metal as much as you want
to make the piece lighter, but that would increase the risk of it becoming
damaged. Also used for making swords and daggers and other bladed weapons.

Hinge: The ability to make more complex plated items, such as
gauntlets and helms with visors and boots and what not. Can be
used in conjunction with hammered items to make them more flexible w/o
decreasing dex as some hammered items can.

Purify: The ability to purify the metals making them stronger, works
automatically with forge skill.

Create forge: When the Blacksmith reaches the Journeyman level
he can build himself a forge anyhwere in Thera, as long as it is close
enough to a stream or water source. Forge would last maybe 300 hours and
would not be affected by death.

Sharpen: The ability to sharpen any weapon.
(as a side note, I thought it would be cool, if weapons blunted which
caused them to lose hit/dam. So that people would have to come back
to blacksmiths to get their weapon sharpened.
And of course a well made blade from a blacksmith would need to be
sharpened less often.

Fit: The ability to fit a piece of armor so that it fits the
race of the person who wishes to buy the armor.

Personalized fit: The ability to make the forged armor fit only the buyer of
the armor. (Unless of course the person who obtain the armor, got it refit for them)

Meltdown: The ability to meltdown metal weapons or armor to use as raw material.

Ring making: The ability to make rings.

Encrust: Add Gems to the piece.

Of course stronger classes would be more adept to the power skills of these and would
be able to hammer better for example.

But Drows and Elves would be better at the more deft with things like, hinging, ringmaking,
and encrusting.

And then maybe a final skill that I am having a hard time thinking up
would be the finalizing of the piece, which would then show if it would glow and hum
and its +'s and -'s. This skill would be nescessary, because the piece would not be
identifiable until then.

Also since blacksmiths do not go out ranking in the normal fasion they will not
be trading these items. The way a Blacksmith would sell these items would be as follows.

1. they can sell for gold. This is the way that a blacksmith were earn the most
points on his way to the next rank.

2. They can trade for items that are of equal value.

A blacksmith who gives away items would lose points towards his next rank.

Of course the imms would have to implement a paying method (simmilar to centurions)

And as always Thieves can steal.

FLAMES AND SUGGESTIONS WELCOME.
Just thinking of way to make gold worth something
and came up with this.
