A scenario for you of Shokai's judgement: A. Svyatopolk. A. Svyatopolk groups with Zeruel, a harmless Troupe conjurer that happens to have a red aura once, inadvertently. Zeruel wasn't even in the same part of the world. Svyatopolk is disgraced. Lesson, here? Maran are measured by a different yardstick than the other Lightwalkers. Other lightwalkers can somehow justify associating and helping evil, even Paladins like Nicolette. Maran can not. The openness is there for you to *expand* your definition of what an evil action is (of course, I'd advise against slaying Lightwalkers without Shok's go ahead - be advised he probably wouldn't give it :P), but, judging by Shokai's judgements in the situations like above, I would advise heavily against *restricting* your evaluation of what is evil. What this means regarding nightgaunts? Think about it. You're negotiating with an evil force, and tying yourself to it. Even if it is for the greater good, Maran do not save the Light by betraying it. Anyway, you, Solkar, and I are all current characters (I think). Let's discuss this in game, in character instead of here, and maybe Shokai will join in. Balrahd.
B. Nicolette and Solian.
B. Nicolette, another paladin, groups with Zeruel at will, as does Solian, the apostle of Dawn.
